How to Create High Quality Lightning Designs on a Shoestring Budget

05 Feb, 2019  /  by admin

There’s little doubt that theatrical productions are seeing budget cuts around the country. Whether it’s for a church production, local theater, or a Broadway show, budgets are always tight related to lighting. At SSRC we’re constantly on the lookout for unique and creative ways to help our customers provide high quality lighting solutions while also staying within any budget constraints they may have. Read on to learn a few creative ways to save money on your lighting designs.

3 Ways to Save Money When it Comes to Lighting for Your Next Project

Use these cost effective lighting strategies to get the most bang for your buck.

Sync Lighting and Video Together

One way to make your lighting look much bigger is to sync the colors that you’re using for lighting with the colors that the video team is using. This helps to make your lighting look much more dynamic and bright without requiring any extra money.

Use Visible Fixtures to Maximize the Impact of Your Lighting

Everyone’s likely been to one too many concerts where the lights flash constantly right in the eyes of the audience constantly. While this approach isn’t very effective, you can use inexpensive lights such as LED striplights attached to trusses or pipes and run them at a low percentage to create some intriguing lighting effects. Most of these striplights allow you to segment the fixture and use color changes to create added movement.

Turn Off Some of Your Lights

This may sound counterintuitive, but you can actually make your lighting displays look bigger by using only a portion of your available lights for the majority of the show. This way you can turn all of your lights on at once at key points within your show to build energy or accentuate a certain portion of the event.

You can also experiment with having certain moments where you use just backlight, sidelight or front lighting for added depth.
